Car accidents are still prevalent in roads, and though you might not get into one so far, eventually it will happen to you at least once, fatal or not.
Human error, weather and road mishaps like misplaced objects and a hole contribute to yearly car accident reports, but the first cause is always the biggest contributor. In the end, no matter how good the weather is or how pristine the roads are, it always comes down to the responsibility of drivers. That includes you.
No speeding
Speed limits laws exist for a reason. Depending on the roads and environment, you must obey different speed limits accordingly and never go beyond the numbers. The reason why trains are safer than cars is because the former travels more or less the same speed as others, while in the latter case, different speeds were driven by everybody.
Since you can either be too slow or fast to stop an accident, the inevitable already happens and there is nothing you can do but to process and face your losses. Worse case scenario, even more serious than a smashed up car, you will be disabled or close to death.
Or the other involved driver suffers the same fate and you may have to deal with the law.
Thus, it is important that you moderate your driving speed. When you are driving fast, you are only doing this to overtake another vehicle, especially if it is a lorry. As much as you want to reach your destination faster, it is better that you arrive safe and sound, even if you are a bit late.
Even with no cars around in the dead hours of the night, you wouldn’t want to drive so fast only to skid across the road and crash. This is more guaranteed to happen if you are driving on a rainy day where the roads are slippery.
Highway lanes
A lot of drivers tend to forget that the rightmost lane on a highway isn’t an exclusive race track that you drive on and disobey speed limits. No, the purpose of that lane is to overtake another vehicle and go back to your middle lane. Even if you have to use the right, you still shouldn’t exceed the speed limits.
Still, why stick to that lane when you can just stick to the middle? You will still reach your destination either way. Also if you want to feel extra safe or you are still fresh from driving school, use the left lane. It is also here that you can drive a little slower, but not enough to hinder a car behind you.
Also, never change lanes, or do that as little as possible. While you are still quite far from a route you want to enter, stick to the middle lane if you want to pick up some speed, or just the left instead.
Once you are two kilometers away or so, switch to the left if you haven’t already, and stay there. Do not try to overtake any vehicle. Just keep your distance from their boots until you finally make your turn to enter the route towards your next town or so.
